Port Jervis Soap Box Derby Crowns Four Champs for 2010!

June 13, 2010 - Port Jervis, NY - The 11th annual Port Jervis PBA Soap Box Derby crowned four champs earlier today. Johanna Formisano, Hannah Bisland, Thomas Vause and Tyler Addy will all go on to represent Port Jervis in the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio in late July.

Although the weather wasn't completely cooperative, hundreds of spectators lined the streets as 144 Drivers competed in the 2nd largest Soap Box Derby in the world for a chance to win the coveted week-long trip to Akron, Ohio to race with the world's elite.

"I think I smell a victory!" said Super Kids Driver, Johanna Formisano, earlier in the day. She went on to win first place in her division.

This year's derby was sponsored by several local businesses and organizations such as Kolmar, Shoprite, Frontier Communications and 96.7 /103.1 Radio. "Without the support of this community, this event could never happen," said Billy McKerrell, Assistant Director of the Derby. "It is absolutely amazing how many people come together to make this all happen."

Over 200 Volunteers showed up derby day to support the event. Some lifted cars, some fixed them, some were traffic control while others made sure drivers had lunch, drank plenty of water and held umbrellas over the kids as they waited for their turn down the hill.

The day's festivities were attended by several area dignitaries including Orange County Legislator Dennis Simmons. "I remember this event from when I was a kid," said Simmons as he addressed the crowd of drivers, parents, staff and supporters. "This event is a great example of the spirit of Port Jervis!"
